The Programme to Improve Learning Outcomes (PILO) is an organization that has been appointed by the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT) as project managers for driving the improvements in two KwaZulu Natal districts, namely Pinetown and Uthungulu.
Prior to the mainstream intervention, the NECT has requested a short intervention that seeks to provide a boost and initial readiness for a few ‘limping’ school. This is known as the ‘Fresh Start Schools Programme’ (FSSP).
PSA has been sub-contracted by PILO for the support of both districts in getting the principals/SMTs of Fresh Start Schools ready.
This project includes support of schools to work on a few short-term goals to get them prepared for the mainstream intervention as well as collation of some basic data about the school which includes understanding what their main challenges are that stop them from achieving the best results. These challenges are meant to include systemic issues which PILO will escalate to district/provincial offices and NECT with the aim of sourcing support or resolution where possible.
12 FSS Coaches are involved in this process from April to June 2014.
