Seven Early Childhood Development centres supported by the Mkhulise Young Minds Development Programme have received laptops in a milestone step toward financial sustainability.
The laptops, donated by the Mkhulise project, will eventually be transferred to ownership by the ECD managers after one year provided maintenance conditions are met. Their primary purpose is to enable ECD managers to closely track day-to-day income and expenditure and participate in a financial management programme run by PSA.
Digital Democracy partnered with PSA on the handover, ensuring devices were properly configured and providing initial functionality training, at their own cost.
Six of the seven centres hold Gold status with the Department of Education, reflecting full compliance with subsidy requirements. The Department's move to quarterly advance subsidy payments is expected to further strengthen financial stability.
"The laptops are an important step in our work toward financially sustainable ECDs — but only one step. Bringing parents along will be equally critical, shifting their perception of these centres from simple childcare facilities to the early childhood development environments they truly are," said Rob Wilson of PSA.
