The 2026 launch of the Holistic Ubuntu Leadership Development (HUD) Programme took place at Premier Inn Pinetown on 28 February, bringing together 40 student leaders from Sithokozile, Buhlebemfundo, Ilanga and Umqhele Secondary Schools in KwaDabeka as part of the wider Mkhulise programme.

The HUD programme was originally developed and piloted at the Mandla Mthethwa School of Excellence in Ndumo (uMkhanyakude District), where it has since been mainstreamed into the school curriculum. Designed for Grade 8 and Grade 9 learners, the programme closely aligns with and strengthens the Department of Basic Education’s Life Orientation curriculum.

While 17 learners graduated during the first two years of the programme across the four Kwadabeka schools, the current cohort represents a significant expansion in participation.

During the launch session, participants worked through three units from the leadership workbook exploring themes such as teamwork, responsibility and effective communication. These sessions introduced practical leadership concepts that learners can apply in their schools and communities.

A highlight of the day was the introduction to reflective journaling, encouraging learners to think about their leadership journeys and personal development. Interactive games and group challenges reinforced the programme’s key themes while promoting communication, problem-solving and collaboration.

The launch set the tone for the six-month leadership programme, which builds on Life Orientation topics and includes themes such as Ubuntu values, supportive relationships, gratitude and forgiveness, growth mindset, teamwork, ethical decision-making, equality and courage. Participants will also attend a three-hour Career Guidance workshop facilitated by Zoe Life.

Programme Coordinator, Sinokuhle Hlengwa from Izingcweti Ziyafunda Zifundise said “Learners will complete a team-based leadership project and deliver individual presentations. Judging from the enthusiasm at the launch, the programme again promises to be a rewarding journey of personal growth and leadership development for all involved.”
