Old Mutual Education Programme Award Ceremonies

The Management & Leadership component of the Old Mutual Education Programme in Mpumalanga, facilitated and led by PSA, concluded with award ceremonies at the Elangeni Lodge in Ehlanzeni and the Anew Hotel in Nkangala on 28 November and 2 December 2024.

The ceremonies recognized the SMTs of the 50 participating schools, as well as selected district officials, who had been involved since the programme's commencement in 2021. In all, 131 awards were made to individuals from the schools and districts. Eleven schools from each district received Certificates of Distinction for the verified levels of new management practices they had achieved.

Three schools from each district that had the highest % of learners achieving above 50% across all subjects from Gr 1 -7 at the 2024 mid-year assessment outcomes, received Certificates of Excellence. Certificates were also issued to the top three district officials for their achievement in the Future Education Leadership programme focused on 21st-century skills, Education 4.0 and the new world of work.

Each certificated individual was additionally presented with a gift bag by the Old Mutual Foundation and the schools selected for Certificates of Excellence received monetary vouchers.

Rob Wilson, Senior Programme Manager from PSA, thanked Ms Lettie Mabaso and Dr Andries Shabangu from Ehlanzeni and Nkangala Districts who trained and coached at the schools throughout the programme. He encouraged the SMT members and district officials to continue the improvement processes they had started, quoting from Leo Buscaglia that “Change is the end result of all true learning”.

There was some reflection of the changes which had been achieved which included an improvement from the start of the programme where only 42% of the schools were actively tracking curriculum compared to 96% of the schools at the end. (The detailed outcomes of this programme will be shared in our next newsletter).

Acknowledgement and thanks were given to Old Mutual for their investment and commitment to improving education - without their funding, the programme would not have been possible.
